Ancient Lines is a play on words and images within the painting. It refers to the ancient lines of the Smoky Mountains and the lines of the rocks and the lines in this man's face and hands as well as the ancient tribal markings on his body. It also refers to the hieroglyphs in the rocks. Most people don't associate hieroglyphs with the Cherokee but a great example can be seen at Truck-Rock Gap, Georgia. Finally this man is saying a prayer to his ancestors which continues his Ancient Line.
